Mini Interview with Mandy of Modern Whimsy

As wedding season quickly approaches, many couples are starting to plan their big day. It can all be a little overwhelming, but with help from event coordinators like Mandy from Modern Whimsy, the chaos, nerves, and never-ending checklists can be calmed.

Choosing a stationer can also be an immense task in an of itself, do you go with an online retailer, a storefront out of the book design, or a custom stationer? How soon do you need to start on your stationery?

Save the Dates can be a great way to get others excited and prepared for your wedding, especially if its a destination affair, but who to send them to? and how early? Do you want formal and classic invites? or something with a little more "you"? I thought it may help those of you who are beginning the planning process to hear some advice straight from Mandy. I emailed her a list of questions that she was kind enough to answer, and I want to share her answers with you.

Any pointers for couples as they start their wedding planning? Related to stationery or other?

Biggest pointers: communicate with your fiance, work out a budget, and have fun! Remember, this day is about celebrating your commitment to each other. Don't let the details ruin the purpose for the wedding. A great way to help with that: hire a wedding planner (wink wink). :) A wedding planner can help you keep a clear head about things during the planning process, as well as keep everything running smoothly on the day of, so that you can enjoy yourself! So find your style, work with vendors that you are comfortable with, and give your fiance a hug and kiss every now and then, ok? Ok. Happy planning!

What do you think is the most important thing for a couple to remember when they're starting out looking for a stationer?

It's hard to nail down just one important aspect of your stationer, but one thing definitely stands out: Style. First off, figure out what you want your big day to feel like, what you want the atmosphere to be like. Look at your prospective stationer's portfolio, and see if that matches up with what you are thinking. Don't feel bad if you find a stationer that is very talented, but doesn't match your style. He/she will understand!

How do you feel about Save The Dates? Are they important and a must or a per event consideration?

I think that Save the Dates are not entirely necessary, unless you are planning a destination wedding, a wedding around a holiday, or another time of year where people typically have busy schedules. If you are sending out your invitations at an appropriate time (around 6-8 weeks before your big day) then people should have enough time to make the event.

However, if you have the time and energy to create the Save the Dates, then go for it! It can be another fun way to get people excited for your wedding (they will no doubt want to see your engagement photos as soon as possible!) and it really never hurts to give people as much advanced notice as you can.

Do you have etiquette pointers for a Save The Date?

Etiquette- wise, your save the dates are just a snippit of the information regarding your big day. No need to include a ton of information, just when the event will be, maybe the link to your wedding website, and a photo of you and your fiance.

Do you prefer a certain format? Or do you like them to be unique?

Uniqueness is always encouraged in my book! There are so many ways you can customize your Save the Dates. They should reflect the feel of your wedding. If you are planning on an elegant, classy affair, then you should send physical Save the Dates by mail. If you want more of a casual wedding, you can even send them via email! A Save the date for a beach destination wedding can be shaped like a shell, or something fun to let your guests know what to expect. Of course, the invitation itself will give more of the details to this, as well. Be creative!

How far in advance should Save The Dates be sent? and to whom?

Generally, it's best to send out Save the Dates 6 months or so before the wedding. Maybe even allot more time if you are planning a destination wedding. You should send them to everyone that you are planning on inviting. It would be very unfair to send it to a "maybe" on your list, and then decide that you don't want them to come, after all. Work out your guest list before you send them out!

What are your favorite trends you see being really exciting this year?

I love seeing couples take one small element of their personality or style, and totally running with it. For example, if you and your special someone are really into biking, incorporate bike elements throughout your event: wheels as small touches of decor, a bike basket as a card station....it would be such a cute idea! Or if you like a certain place/region of the world, make that your "theme". Gone are the days of picking two colors for your wedding day- branch out!

You have probably seen the sneak peak post about my daughter's 2nd birthday party. It was a success and I'm so happy with how all the details turned out. Thanks to my friend Brooke who helped set up and provided the glossy round labels for stickers and snack boxes.

Claire is obsessed with airplanes, but there isn't much out there for a girly airplane party. This was the main inspiration. Why couldn't she have an airplane party? Why can't a girl love airplanes as much as boys? I found a color board on Pinterest (as well as a ton of other inspiring images and ideas) of midnight blue and shades of pink. I think it worked really well. Here are the invitations we sent out:

The backdrop was a ribbon banner centered behind the table and cake. On either side were vintage hard bodied suitcases I borrowed from my wonderful photographer friend's prop closet (BrookeWest Photography). One was filled with suitcase shaped favor boxes and a sign for the "Baggage Claim" where the guests would pick them up after the party. In each favor box were small foam gliders the kids could put to ether and decorate, a passport sticker book, bubbles and fruit snacks. The other suitcase had a sign for the "Galley" where there were personal snack boxes ready for the guests. Each box had a mini peanut butter and jelly, Annie's bunny snacks, grapes and chocolate chip cookies.

The cake was the part that I got the most questions about before the party. After last years rainbow cake, we had set the bar high. This year we created a cake spelling out "cake," decorated with blue sugar and pipped clouds. Using two pink paper straws a small airplane and clouds were strung across as if flying over the cake. Each letter of the cake was a different color: two shades of pink and two shades of blue.

For the activities, since the kids ranged in age from 20 months to 10 years, we had a table set up with bass wood airplanes and crayons to decorate them. Some of the kids took the planes outside to fly them. There were also "Pilot in Training" stickers, because lets face it, what kid doesn't like a sticker? Most of the time, the kids spent outside playing, since it was slightly chilly but still beautiful out.

It was such a fun party, and the most important part, Claire had a great time with all of her friends. Thank you to everyone who joined in on the fun!

Whimsical holiday

I became acquainted with Modern Whimsy through a search for Austin event and wedding coordinators, to send out Bloom's marketing materials. Over the past few months, I've shared a few email conversations with Mandy, the owner of Modern Whimsy. I can tell that we share a love for all things beautiful and well put-together. Design is important and beautiful, whether floral design, event design or stationery.

Mandy contacted me to create some holiday cards for her. She used words like "simple, fresh, modern and rustic" to describe what she was looking for. She also mentioned that she likes pinecones, bare branches, and deep reds. Mandy also provided all the text, including the quote. I couldn't have asked for better guidance. I'm so happy with how these turned out. If these cards are any indication of Mandy's sensibility and the beautiful events she puts together, I highly recommend Modern Whimsy!

Home for the Holidays

My Mother-in-Law asked for a holiday card design again this year, and with out a family picture as a jumpstart like last year's card we took some inspiration from the Address Change card we created this year. Already having the image of their new home, I altered it a bit, adding a christmas tree and lights on the house. They also live where it snows, unlike here in Texas, so adding that was necessary as well.

We also printed return addresses on the envelopes and included seals.

Family Holiday Card 2011

This family has been a loyal holiday card customer for three years running. Here are the 2009 and 2010 posts. Its been really neat to not only see the kids grow up, but to see them grow through my illustrations of them. In these cards, the clients wanted a more "hand-drawn feel" this year. The illustration was hand drawn, scanned and then colored digitally. Even the foliage and "Happy Holidays" are hand-drawn. Thank you to this family, for always bringing me a new challenge and for allowing me to capture you're beautiful girls (an pets) on paper.

Bloom Favorite: Grey

Grey is everywhere! And I am not complaining. I love grey as a neutral to really highlight and make a bright color pop. I can't look through a blog without seeing a grey inspired wedding somewhere in the mix. Just think about all the colors that Grey goes with. Its a grey-t (haha, I make myself laugh!) compliment to any event's color scheme. Today I found myself fawning over the grey and orange, and grey and yellow combinations while making these inspiration boards on StyleMePretty.

Sneak Peek: Pink and Blue Airplane Party

My daughter is OBSESSED with airplanes. So much so that we are going to do our best to give her an airplane party for her upcoming second birthday. On Saturday I was fortunate to drive to Houston for a Letterpress class at the Museum of Printing History. My friend Tania joined me both for the drive and the class. We had a blast. It was so fun! Not only did I get to spend that time with Tania, and meet the fellow Letterpress enthusiasts, but we actually went through the motions of designing, typesetting, proofing and printing.

Tania and I left bright and early at 6:30am to make the 3 hour drive into Houston. We arrived about 2 and half hours later after a coffee stop and some pretty interesting sleepy-eyed conversation. Its always hard to form words, let alone complete sentences, when its still dark outside and my IV coffee drip hasn't been started. We arrived to an open but empty museum, it was a little erie. As other students and the instructor arrived Tania and I felt more at ease, knowing our 3 hour trip was not in vain. I have to admit that for a few minutes I wondered if the class was really going to happen.

Amanda, our wonderful instructor (also the curator of the museum), introduced the class with a selection of business cards that previous students of the class had created and that she had collected through the years. We each introduced ourselves and our purpose. There was an interior designer (thanks to Kelly for her pictures from weekendprojectgirl.blogspot.com), a marketing/advertising guy turned graphic designer -- due to accidentally falling more in love with typography in the ads than the ads themselves, and a married couple -- one a photographer the other an intern-architect who had fallen in love with letterpress during wedding planning (as many people do), Tania -- an intern-architect, and myself -- designer and artist. The size of the class was a big plus, with only 6 students there was plenty of room in the workshop to move around and each have a chance to participate.

Amanda gave us a typesetting demo, using physical lead type and a composing stick. She taught us the lingo, most of which I have a cheat sheet for because I have forgotten. When she was done with her demo she let us loose to create our own "business card" design. The collection of type was incredible and I quickly just picked the first drawer I opened for my design. I didn't want to get caught up in choosing a font when I just wanted to practice the art form of typesetting. I created a card for my 22 month old daughter who loves to dance, hence the "dancer extraordinaire."

Because none of us had ever done this before it took us a little over an hour to actually compose the type for a standard business card size. Its a beautiful but labor intensive process. When we had all completed our composition, we lined them up together and locked them on the platen of the table-top press that we would use to proof. My Showcard press that I have at home is similar to this, but a smaller table-top size. We each had the opportunity to run the press once for a proof set. A few of us made some minor changes after proofing.

Amanda helped us to split them into two groups of three and lock them up together to move the set to the platen of our Kelsey table-top, and the other group's floor model Kelsey. We had the opportunity to "ink-up" the plates and rollers, set the paper guides and run a series of prints. Amanda showed us how to adjust the "packing" and adjust the pressure to achieve the perfect print every time. Of course every press is and will be different. Our group; Tania, Kelly and I, figured out how to do a double run on each sheet for the intensity of color. You should have seen our excitement after the first pull. WOW, it was incredible!

We ran out of time to cut apart the cards, so Amanda will be sending each of us our cards -- I will post pictures of those when I receive them.

Its been a dream of mine to learn this incredibly hands on art form and in turn be able to offer it to my clients. We are half way there! There is still so much to learn, but I really feel like I'm on my way to falling in love with the process. I returned from Houston gushing to my family and friends about the experience.

Learn the basics of setting type by hand and letterpress printing using the table-top platen press, still widely available on the market. Learn the california job case, set type, use a pica ruler and composing stick, mix ink, ink the press and print. Each student will set and print his or her own business card. Rex...the dog

Our friends recently purchased a home, so for a house warming gift I painted them a portrait of their dog, Rex. Rex is the coolest little dog ever, and is also a good friend of our family, so we felt he deserved a place of honor in their new home.

It had also been a while since I painted with oils on canvas, so this was also an opportunity to touch my brushes. I took a new approach, having never approached a dark primed canvas, I primed this canvas with black acrylic paint. This worked really nicely and I'm not sure why I never have done it before. I look forward to the next painting opportunity.

Wrap it up!

I've always had a love for wrapping presents. When the holidays roll around, I can't wait to find wrapping paper and make them all coordinate! Making it look cute and matching various wrapping accessories is all consuming for me. We have a friend who's birthday just passed and the party is this weekend. She too I know has a love for making gifts aesthetically pretty and will appreciate this as much as I do! As September rolls around theres a lull around here, between wedding season and holiday season. Bloom Favorite Revisited - LemonLime Photography

Those of you who have been following me here for a while may remember my first photography favorite, highlighting LemonLime Photography (you can see the past post on them here.) LemonLime is still a favorite of mine, and yes I may still be biased since they photographed my wedding 5 years ago, but they continue to impress. One Last Prohibition Era Piece.

As a final piece in the Prohibition Era Themed Wedding Package, we designed an announcement to be sent out after the wedding. They are a 5x7 (A7 size) printed on the same 110# stock as the other pieces in the package. Each has a grey envelope and printed address labels. The clients wanted the wording to reflect some tradition but still give an overall casual feel.

As I perused the blogs today searching for beautiful things, I couldn't help but pause while eyeing all the gorgeous and fun signage ideas. Melissa and Rob had several additional pieces for their wedding besides the invitations we designed together. For their July 22nd wedding we created fan shaped programs and Thank You labels for their candy bags. They looked beautiful out at the wedding, and I hope they are as happy with them as I was.

Besides the invitations, save the dates, bridal shower invitations & extras, we created a guest book (using Apple's iPhoto), programs, buffet cards and a favor donation sign & business cards. I think the complete package looks amazing together, and the lace details carried through out is such a fun addition to the design. Thanks to Jenn & Brandon for the opportunity, I'm happy with the results and I hope you are too.

I created this Address change card design for my in laws who have recently moved. I created a Vector Image of their new home and kept it simple with text and floral vector additions. These were printed on Red River Polar Matte 4x6 double sided photo paper, and mailed in Neenah Solar White Smooth Classic Crest A6 Envelopes. Black White & Red Revealed!

This formal black and white affair with a hint of red, has been sent out into the world, and so the bride has given me the go ahead to post more images. These invitations with custom monogram worked into the scroll work included an envelopment, invitation, directional card with custom map, celebrate card with reception information and an RSVP postcard. Rather than inner and outer envelopes, we formally addressed the envelopes and designates the invitees with a label sealing the envelopment inside. Prohibition Era Themed Wedding Revealed

Jenn & Brandon's Wedding Invitations Revealed!
The invitations for this wedding have gone out and the bride has given me permission to show the world.
So... here they are, in all their grey and coral glory. Each invitation arrived in a string tied stardream onyx # 10 envelope and wrap band personalized address labels. Upon opening the recipient pulls out two cards wrapped with a 1.25" satin ribbon and sealed with the invitees designated on a name label. The invitation card is a #10 110lb card stock wrapped with white lace and sewn with coral thread in a scalloped pattern. The invitation card text contains a variety of fonts and embellishments to give it the old time feel with a modern take. The second card contains a tear off RSVP postcard to be mailed back by the guest, and the remaining card contains information about the wedding details, including a website. This card can be retained and hung on the fridge or placed in a wallet for safe keeping until the event date. The coral and slate grey details tie in with the save the dates and other wedding package pieces. The lace pattern on the save the date is the same as the actual lace sewn onto the wedding invitations. Please let me know what you think! All comments are welcome!

Here is a sneak peak of a recent wedding invitation project. My cousin is the bride and she is aiming for a formal black and white affair with a hint of red. I think we captured the essence of her day, including a custom monogram worked into the scroll work. Picture Circus UPDATE

The Georgetown Library with the help of Nick Ramos, of Graphisimo design — who coordinated the event, put on the first ever Picture Circus festival to celebrate Día de los Niños/Dia los Libros. The festival focused on illustrators of children’s books. It was a great event, with a great turn out. I was lucky enough to participate, with my table for Santa’s North Pole After Christmas Elves. I didn’t sell as much as I had hoped, but it was great seeing all the families enjoying the event, and meeting other local illustrators. Many people also took the book information with them, rather than buying it right then and there.
I hope to have the opportunity to participate again next year!

My daughter and husband were able to come to the festival for a bit and visit. Claire even had her first “face painting” experience, a butterfly on her arm!

Casually Pretty

As Matron of honor in my Sister-In-Law's wedding this July, it is in my job description (and I really wanted to! I didn't do it just because of the job description.) to throw a bridal shower for the bride. Being as she is in Kansas City, and I am in Austin, I needed a little more help from her than I normally would ask for this sort of thing. The original thought was a formal tea party, but the cost per person is exorbitant. Then we thought maybe a spa day shower, Mani-Pedis, with some wine and food. Well the salon wasnt large enough for our group for a lunch and Kansas has wierd liquor laws. So, in thinking of another option, she suggested a yummy Frozen Yogurt/Coffee Shop she likes. It was the perfect casual luncheon location, followed by a trip to the salon for those who chose to do so.

I wanted to keep with her invitation themes and designs, but make it different enough that it wouldn't give away the "ooohhhs" and "ahhhsss associated with opening the magical invitation envelope in a few weeks. So I used the same themes, colors, and changed the fonts. I think it was a success and I was very happy with them.

I sent out a Save The Date for the shower, even though its not widely accepted, or usually unnecessary to do this. I wanted to be sure to nail down the numbers for the salon, and get the appointments for that made, while still having everyone mark their calendars with a date for the luncheon. It was an just a PDF in an email, but included the same designs and themes as the rest of the package. A few weeks later I sent out the invitations; A7 size flat white card, in grey envelopes with white labels and a lace printed seal.

At the shower each lady was presented with a ring tied to a card with instructions for a game. The guests were not allowed to say the brides name or the word "Bride," and if they did someone could steal their BLING. The game was, I felt, classy and not cheesy or annoying as many shower games can be, and it wasnt embarrasing for the bride. At each place setting was a basswood lace cut fan ordered from a wedding favor site, with a place card and menu. Some of the girls arrived early to help me set up, making tissue pom-poms for the table and we lined the center of the table with ribbon an cut flowers.

The luncheon consisted of fresh sandwiches, salad, soup and topped off with frozen custard of course!

I want to thank all the girls for helping set up, and everyone for attending, we had a nice time. Also, Foo's Fabulous Frozen Custard in Kansas City was so easy and fantastic to work with! The salon following was nice and relaxing, though there were a few hiccups in the appointment set-up process and payment process, the services offered by Par Exsalonce in KC were fantastic as well.

Sneak Peak: Prohibition Era Themed Wedding

I have been working on wedding details and invitations with my sister-in-law and her wonderful husband-to-be (we call him pseudo-uncle Brandon, for my daughter, soon-to-be Uncle B!). I posted a while back with images of their Save The Dates, and I am in the process of editing photos of the Bridal Shower I hosted for the bride earlier this month. Everything is cohesive and coming along together nicely. The invitations are assembled and have been mailed to the bride -- awaiting stamps to be sent off to the invitees. The next step are buffet cards, a favor card (or some-sort) and programs. But, until the invitations have been mailed and recieved, I wouldnt want to ruin the surprise! Here is just a taste of the detailing we have put together for this special day.

Bloom Favorite: Vintage Inspiration

I've always been very plain in my own design or decoration, and my wedding motto was "simple elegance." This simple elegance involved clean lines and absolutely no lace! But I'm realizing as I peruse wedding blogs, and design stationery for others that I am more and more drawn to the vintage elements that are a huge trend right now. Perhaps its that I am getting older, or maybe its the sentimentality that is involved when planning weddings, but the connection to family and the past seems to be more important than it used to be. If I had to plan my wedding all over, there would be much more of these beautifully personal vintage elements.

Royal Wedding Professional Shots

Another modern take on the old days

My sister-in-law and her fiance are getting married this coming July. Their colors are slate grey and coral, with a prohibition era feel for their Kansas City wedding. They wanted me to play with the fonts in a way that was reminiscent of old bar menus and a lot of the new "old-time-classic-cocktail" rejuvenation happening all over the country.

Here are the Save The Date postcards. The invitations will remain a surprise until guests receive them, but this gives the guests just a taste of what they have to look forward to.

Modern Take on the 1800s Royal Wedding

Bloom was given a wonderful opportunity to be a part of an inaugural event here in Austin. Austin Wedding Day’s 1st Diamond Domain Bridal Soiree was this past weekend at the Westin Resort in The Domain. 8 of Austin's top wedding planners were invited to create an 11' x 13' space within their chosen theme. Valerie of Beyond The Big Day invited Bloom to be the stationer for her room at this event. The theme Valerie chose was an 1800's Royal Wedding in reds and golds.

I really think it turned out amazing. The pieces we created for this mock wedding were:

SAVE THE DATE
A Save The Date was created as a flat card adorned with a single gem and paired with a matching envelope addressed with return address and recipient's address.

INVITATION
A 5x7 invitation sent in a black invitation box wrapped with a red velvet ribbon, white label and sealed with a crown-wax-seal. Upon opening the box the recipient finds a red envelopment tied closed with a gold cord and tassel. Inside the envelopment is a white textured invitation adorned with an embossed red paper, fine gold-chain-like-ribbon, and ruby red gems. The RSVP is a folded response card hanging over the envelopment pocket and paired with a gold stardream envelope, printed with both return address and address.

ESCORT/DANCE CARDS
The escort cards doubled as a dance card, which was common in the 1800s at any formal affair where dancing was involved. These small folded cards hang from decorative tacks, within an ornate blac

k frame backed with red velvet. Each card is adorned with a gold cord and ruby red gems. The bride and groom each were given a dance card as well. The bride's card is adorned with a long ribbon, matching the invitations, that can hang on her wrist throughout the evening. The groom's card is adorned with a gold tassel and cord to be worn in his coat pocket.

PLACE SETTINGS AND EXTRAS
Each place setting has a menu adorned with ruby red gems and a place card adorned with gems on top of a petit four. Each table has a place card also adorned with gems. Extra signage was designed for the gift card box as well as an instructional sign for the escort card board. Favor tags were created to tie the design into small chocolate boxes.

1st Birthday

It's incredible how time flies! My daughter turned one a few weeks ago, and we of course threw her a birthday party. A party of all parties. I had been scoping out ideas for months. We decided on a duck themed

party since that was her first word and she was mildly obsessed with ducks for months. With that theme I began to think of color schemes and after finding an image on another blog using olive green, persimmon, orange and yellow, I decided to use that scheme but change out the olive green for a bright pink. I ran with it!

I created invitations, favor tags, cake topper circles with a special one for hers, a banner, and a first birthday hat. For activities we had decorate your own ducks (found at orientaltrading.com), and a duck matching game floating her little baby pool (also found at orientaltrading.com). For favors I found little window boxes at the container store and filled them with a birthday rubber duck (orientaltrading.com), a bag of snack bunnies in varying flavors, and duck beak noise makers (hobby lobby).

The cake my husband and I made the night before. He had found a rainbow layered cake on tastespotting.com a while back and decided thats what he wanted to do for her party. It was a fun project, especially for an art major. We used 5 colors of professional bakers gel dye (available at craft stores or baking stores) and mixed them indifferent concentrations to get the colors. Of course we only had 6 baking pans so it took 3 batches in the oven, refrigerating the others in the meantime. The next day I iced it with store bought vanilla icing and placed it on a cake board that I wrapped with decorative paper matching the banner and birthday hat, then covered the whole thing in saran wrap.

My daughter made such a cute Cindy Lou Who for Halloween that we couldn't help but use a picture of her for our Holiday Cards this year. I even found a Dr.Seuss font and made our wording rhyme. We did just a flat card and included our personal blog site (blurred out for our privacy). Including a personal blog is a great way to let people see what you've done through the past year.

Family Holiday Cards

My mother in law sent me a picture this year that she wanted to incorporate into her holiday card. None of us in the photo liked how we looked, but alas it was the only picture of all of us taken together this year. So I came up with a more flattering solution. Having done an illustrated card for a client this season, I took the same concept for the photo that she wanted to include. Im pretty happy with the result. The whole family has commented on them and seems to really like the end product. What do you think?

Family Holiday Cards 2010

Remember this family from last year? Well this year they've added one to the mix, another little girl. They asked this year for something similar, but with a red, blue and brown color scheme-- that they had seen when searching cards online. I combined some images they sent and again painted them in photoshop. I added a few drawn snowflakes and some orbs for color. 4.5" x 6.25" A6 size on white premium matte Red River 60# and solar white classic crest envelopes.

Chalkboard Mural-ing

My Husband and I have been finishing up our kitchen remodel and on one of the walls we have added a chalkboard wall, using chalkboard paint. We wanted to have a few more permanent features on the wall including kitchen measurement conversions that we are constantly finding ourselves looking up online. We also keep a running list of things we need to get when we run errands. Its very helpful to keep it all in one place.
I decided to look up a few fonts for inspiration as well as make up my own along the way. What do you think?

Every wedding seems to have its one element of inspiration, wether its a feel, an object, a color, or maybe all of those things. Ive noticed lately when scanning the blogs, wedding websites and message boards that brides are finding that one element of inspiration and building absolutely amazing weddings. I know when I work with brides on their design concepts I love to find out what those inspirations are, and its so fun to help a bride build her vision.

Sage Green and Black Wedding Concept

Many of my customers are interested in my hand sewn wedding booklets. This is a concept that was put together for a sage green and black wedding. Each booklet contains all the pieces that are normally separate cards in a traditional wedding invitation: An Invitation, a Directional, an Informational (Details) and an RSVP card. The RSVP in this invitation was a tear off postcard in the back of the booklet. Each invitation would be sent in a white number 10 envelope.

Purple and Green Bachelorette Party

Purple satin ribbon is the perfect addition to this elegant but girly bachelorette party invitation. Printed on white premium matte paper and sent with A7 solar white envelopes, this invitation was a small run project of 15. The design uses several font types together that work to highlight locations and times for the three day affair. I think they turned out nicely, comments are welcome.

Safari Baby Shower

This invitation was a request by a client for a baby shower invite that wasnt too masculine but with a green and brown safari theme. I really had fun creating the baby safari animals. I based them off of the owl that I had created previously for a baby announcement. I think these turned out great! Printed on Premium Matte 5"x7" and A7 solar white envelopes.

There are so many creative ideas out there now for bridal showers! Afternoon Tea, Something Blue, color themes, honeymoon showers. Think of all the great print pieces that could be added to any shower to jazz it up and pull the theme together. Place cards, gift tags, favor tags, menus, invitations, food cards, the list goes on and on! I get excited everytime I see such beautiful images of these creative showers and the thoughts flood as to how print could be incorporated in to the party atmosphere. Can you see it? Owl Baby Announcements

A client asked for baby announcements with a retro feel owl, using brown and green. I created the vector owl and kept the design simple. They were printed on epson white matte and we used white envelopes. I think they turned out pretty cute. Feedback welcome!

I printed another sample using fictitious names to protect the client privacy but so the details can be seen in the images.

Afternoon Tea Bridal Shower Invitations

A client of mine is a friend of Kim, a wedding client whom I have mentioned before. She is throwing a Bridal Shower for Kim and wanted the invitations to match Kim's wedding package. We created these invitations with a little of the filigree design from Kim's wedding invites and the same color scheme. We printed them on white matte paper and used Leaf colored envelopes to match.

Bloom Favorite- Birthday Parties

When I was searching around for some Turtle Party Inspiration, I came across so many creative and exciting birthday party themes. It made me want to plan Claire's 1st birthday today! However, I must restrain myself, being as we still have 9 months until that party rolls around. But how cute are these ideas! The color palettes are all so vibrant, the details are fabulous, and the kids -- absolutely adorable. Cupcakes are in right now with cupcake toppers galore. Ribbons, streamers, favors. Its amazing what talented and creative people can do when throwing such beautiful parties for their kids. Think of all the print related items you we could create together for your child's next party!

Grady's 1st Birthday!

Our neighbors and friends asked me to create a Turtle themed 1st Birthday Party Invitation for them. Their son Grady has often been seen wearing a shirt that has a graphic turtle on it that says Speedy. I used this turtle for inspiration, as well as a simple, bright, layout and color scheme.

Kim and David's Save The Dates

Kim and David have asked Bloom to design their Save The Dates, Wedding Invitations and possibly more pieces for their big day this September. Their colors are Ivory, Black and Sage Green. These are printed on Neutral White Classic Crest 80# Cover in the postcard format to save postage. You'll have to check back to see their wedding invitations later this year, but here are the Save The Dates!

Bridal Shower/Bachelorette Party Invitations

This is my first finished project since having been on maternity leave. This client wanted two invitations that matched so that she could send the bridal shower invitation to all of her guests and then a bachelorette party invitation in the same envelope to some of the guests. Her keywords were blue and girly. Let me know what you think, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.

We had a beautiful little girl born on December 14th and since then I've been devoted to being MOM. I still am devoted to being Mom, but after a few requests for cards and invitations, I'm back working -- at least part time and upon request. I hope to share these upcoming and current projects with you soon.

Bloom Favorite- Print Possibilities

It seems these days that print designs have become a great way to make a complete wedding experience more cohesive. Its a great way to tie everything together, from the Save The Date several months in advance to favor tags for the gifts your guests will take home with them. Below are a few integrated design ideas. Using the same fonts, colors, logo or monogram, the overall feeling of the wedding can carry through every aspect. Holiday Card

This client wanted custom artwork of her daughter, dog and cat for her holiday cards this year. With photos of each character, I combined the drawings, scanned them and colored them in Photoshop. I used some vectors to create the scenery and greenery around them. Let me know what you think.

A Bloom favorite... Cupcakes!

I've seen a huge trend in serving cupcakes at weddings rather than a traditional cake. Though I think there are merits to both, the thought of all the exciting print components that can be combined with a cupcake display are really exciting. Logos, flavor tags, station signs, think of all the possibilities. I have had a client whose baker used a monogram we designed for their wedding on their cake, it turned out great. (I'll try and get a picture from them to share). I think cupcakes lend themselves nicely to small accent decor, and I love seeing this trend!

October featured greeting card design!

Bloom's new greeting card this month is now available for sale on Etsy. A birthday card with a halloween theme, this card reads "Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional. - Chili Davis." The inside reads "Wear your costume with pride. Happy Birthday!" This laser printed card on white 60# stock is adorned with a thin orange ribbon and Halloween graphics.

Shark Party!

This client wanted a short run of custom invitations for her son's first birthday party. Her husband and daughter had already decided that not only was it going to be an under the sea theme but a Shark Party! She wanted a friendly looking shark and the blue/green color scheme, other than that she didn't have any specific style or design guidelines. Heres the final product we came up with, what do you think?

Pink and Brown Butterflies

My friend and neighbor approached me about baby announcements for her new little girl Addison. WWith this adorable picture of Addison in her pink dress, it leant itself nicely to the pink and brown color scheme the client had decided on when she found out she was having a girl. With Strawberry envelopes and a design based off a little boy baby announcement I did a while back, the butterflies and strawberry satin ribbon were the perfect adornment to this 5 x 7 announcement.

A Bloom favorite... Inspiration in Yellow

I've been an avid fan of Style Me Pretty since I was planning my wedding and helping friends with great ideas for their weddings, but Style Me Pretty recently became a whole lot more fun! I just joined as a member when I saw that you can now go on their site and make your own inspiration boards. There are tons of gorgeous pictures to choose from in all the necessary wedding planning categories from shoes to invitations. I suggest joining if you are a wedding enthusiast like I am, even if you aren't planning a wedding, to play around with the inspiration board feature and see what beautiful things are happening in the wedding world out there!

I've noticed when perusing the wedding invitation sites and wedding planning sites that Yellow is a huge trend right now. Of course three years ago when I got married and our colors were Yellow and Brown, it seemed almost impossible to find. Yellow roses are still my favorite and I would adorn my home with them everyday if I could! Here is an inspiration board created with some of my wedding pictures from 3 years ago. Holiday Cards

It may seem hard to believe but the holiday season is approaching.

Due to the upcoming arrival of our first child in early December holiday card orders will have to be made and completed early this year. The deadline for holiday orders this year will be the first of November, with all orders filled and completed by mid November.

Grady's Baby Announcements

Our neighbor's son was born in March and she asked if I would design their baby announcements. I love the way they turned out and the colors and layout really match the little guy's personality. Let me know what you think! Each announcement is 5" x 7" printed on Red River Ultra Pro Satin, and enclosed in an A7 solar white envelope.

Vows and Ceremony script

Pink, Green and Brown Programs & Cake design

Ann and Kyle had discussed with me the use of their monogram and theme in other areas of their wedding besides the invitations. They decided on programs as well as using the monogram on their cake. We printed 125, 9" x 6" programs using the same concept as the invitation. It was a very traditional, double sided program. I am waiting to hopefully get some pictures from the bride of the cake with the monogram on it as well.
